Wild Card

Lauren Curtis

In the United States, social media influencers are as popular as movie stars. We constantly watch their YouTube videos, like their Instagram photos, and share their TikToks. However, how many Americans tend to watch influencers from other countries? After all, they are just as influential as the influencers right here in our backyard. One of the influencers with a large social media following in Australia is Lauren Curtis. Lauren mainly focuses on beauty brand reviews and advice.

Personally, I have never watched Laurens's videos, but through research for this paper, I have come to enjoy her content. She has 3.36 million followers on her Youtube account, where she posts things about her personal life and beauty hacks. According to Lauren's Channel:
"This channel is centered around all things beauty - from makeup and hair tutorials to product reviews and hauls - I've got everything covered! Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to subscribe!"

Lauren joined Youtube on August 31, 2011, and since then, she has gained 317,273,756 views on her videos. Her views are a testament to her popularity and the quality of her content.

Her videos have made her a popular source of entertainment worldwide and have given her more influence on other social media platforms such as Instagram. Lauren has 1.2 million followers on her Instagram account, where she posts updates on her live, youtube videos, and more beauty reviews. Lauren has made over 3,000 posts on the platform and posts frequently. Just three days ago, she posted a "reel" where she uses Charlotte Tilbury's Hollywood Flawless Filter.

She also makes personal posts about her life. For example, she posts frequent photos of her fiance and discusses achievements that she is making in her journey as an influencer.

These posts help Lauren to spread her global outreach. Along with her Youtube and Instagram, Lauren has a following on Twitter and Facebook.  Lauren mostly "retweets" content on her Twitter rather than making personal content. Her Twitter habits make her relatable because many people do not use Twitter to create content. Lauren's Facebook is very professional. She posts reviews on the platform, but she also interacts with many of her followers. For example, in a recent post, Lauren asks her followers for advice about her new Dyson Airwrap. It is a pleasant surprise considering Lauren usually gives beauty advice.

Lauren has 2.1 million followers on her Facebook account. Also, she does not follow anyone on the platform, giving the impression that she uses Facebook specifically for promotion and content.

Lauren is also involved with the online beauty magazine, Beauticate. She has her own section in the Who's Who section of the magazine, where it discusses her influence, routine, and her career. There is also an article where Lauren discusses her "experience growing up online." She discusses her growth as an influencer and how she has battled insecurity and the unexpected career she created on YouTube. According to the article:

"The only reason I started my YouTube channel back in 2011 is because I could do it from the privacy of my bedroom, and even then, I wouldn’t film if my mum was home. The older I get the more of an introverted homebody I become. I always joke that I would love to have an invisibility cloak. People that know me say I’m an accidental influencer: I never expected it all to blow up like it did, so I’ve really had to push myself out of my comfort zone when it comes to attending events, hosting and public speaking."

Lauren's ability to be a public figure has genuinely changed from sitting in her bedroom to influencing the beauty world. She has been interviewed by several beauty magazines and websites, including a fifty-question interview on Husskie.com. The simple questions range from "Best beauty product of all time?" to "Ocean or swimming pool?"

Lauren also has her own mascara company called Loungeface. According to Lauren on the Loungeface website:

"Over the last 10 years, the number one question I'm asked is 'what mascara are you wearing?', so I thought it was about time I answered that question with 'I made it myself!'"

Although Lauren is from Australia, her product is produced in the USA. The mascara is vegan and cruelty-free, smudge-proof, gives "dramatic volume," and is flake resistant. She also claims that the removal of the mascara is "a breeze:"
  1. Wet your lashes.
  2. Wait 15 seconds.
  3. Gently slide the mascara off between your fingertips or tissue.
"No cloudy mess left behind!"

By researching Lauren, I have become fascinated with her content. Of course, there are many beauty bloggers in the United States, but I enjoy her content. It is nice to see a new face, even though she has been in the beauty game in Australia for a while. Through her social media outreach, I see Lauren becoming larger in other countries, such as the United States. I will continue watching her channel and keeping up with her reviews and advice. If you have never heard of Lauren and like beauty content, I seriously recommend checking out her channel.
